What exactly is bird watching? When you go walking through the woodland and spy a bird, are you bird watching? Do you have to be informed in all things birds so you are considered a bird watcher? Bird watching or birding is simply understood to be the actual observation and the study of birds while using naked eye or through a visual enhancer unit like binoculars. Although some may well take issue, bird watching and birding is essentially the same, both are the observation of birds in the wild.
In the bird watching community though, there is some disagreement regarding grouping the two phrases into the same category. Many regard bird watching to be different when compared with birding on quite a few levels. They think simple bird watchers deem it more like a activity and do not pursue it with similar enthusiasm as a birder. It is believed that bird watchers tend to be content to observe more locally and really don’t spend money on a similar level of equipment as that of a birder. In short, birders do not tend to rank themselves within the same category as bird watchers.
Birders feel this way simply because often spend money on higher technology apparatus and therefore are focused on the study of birds for more than standard observation. Many birders will purchase optical apparatus such as spotting scopes. They might invest in auditory equipment to be able to identify the species by year. They take notice in moult, distribution, migration habits, and habitat. Birders are also more prone to travel in order to pursue their love of birds. It’s a similar sport; one group merely takes it a notch higher when compared with others.
